New Exercise and Nutrition Service at Aurora

New Exercise and Nutrition Service at Aurora

Aurora has this month launched a unique new service in Bassetlaw called TENS – Tailored Exercise Nutritional Support programme. The programme provides physical and nutritional support, and is being delivered by an exercise and nutritional specialist, personalised to people living with and beyond cancer or with long term health conditions.

Research carried out over the last 10 years has found that being more physically active can have positive health outcomes for people living with and beyond cancer and with other medical conditions. It has also revealed that combining this with a healthy diet, can help to lower the risk of cancers returning and reduce the risk of other health problems.

Being active before, during and after treatment can be done safely and can help to:

  • reduce the consequences of treatment which includes fatigue, anxiety and depression, weight gain, and arthritis
  • improve physical function and quality of life
  • improve bone health and muscle flexibility
  • in some cases, being physically active has been shown to reduce cancer progression, mortality and re-occurrence

Despite the number of physical and psychological benefits of being physically active, 68% of 46–64-year-olds across the UK who are living with and beyond cancer are not reaching the current recommended physical activity guidelines. This can be due to the lack of information patients receive from healthcare professionals, and services being unavailable.

The new Tailored Exercise Nutritional Support programme at Aurora is designed to help by not only educating clients on the benefits of participation and good nutrition, but to provide individual support to experience the benefits for yourself.

Individuals that participate in the TENS programme will receive an initial consultation with an exercise specialist where current needs and circumstances can be discussed and personal goals identified. As a result, a tailored plan can then be discussed and created around the individual’s likes and dislikes while working alongside the exercise specialist. The nature of the program is heavily dependent on the client’s circumstances, the stage of treatment, current level of fitness, activities they enjoy and their preference of participation whether that be face to face or over the phone. No two clients experience will be the same and is all tailored around each individual.
