Allison was one of the first cancer patients in Bassetlaw to sign up to the Aurora exercise programme.
Allison, 58 year old from Beckingham in Bassetlaw, was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2020. She underwent surgery the same month and shortly after began a programme of chemotherapy. Allison is due to start radiotherapy in January 2021.
Allison was one of the first cancer patients in Bassetlaw to sign up to the Aurora exercise programme that launched in October 2020. Whilst undergoing her treatment, Allison completed all four of the one-to-one personal exercise sessions.
“I got involved because I thought it was motivational to meet someone with expertise in an area that would help me during my treatment. Having to shield due to Covid-19 had also begun to have an impact, so it felt great knowing I could get out and exercise in a safe environment. And once I’d signed up, it made it much harder to opt-out.”
Allison found having something to focus on during her treatment was incredibly positive. She also believes that exercising, alongside her medical treatment, could improve her health outcomes.
“During chemotherapy, I experienced a lot of fatigue, but the more I exercised, the better I felt. There were days when I thought I couldn’t be bothered, but having the focus of the programme and having experienced the benefits of exercise (not to mention the support from my trainer), made me get up and do more.”
